XBOX Live using PLDT WeRoam and Huawei E220

I'm an avid gamer and even though my XBOX360 died on me thrice, nothing has stopped me from enjoying those titles and garnering more gamerscore. Sometime ago, I was able to make a Huawei E220 modem work over the XBOX Live network. I subscribing to the PLDT WeRoam service. I wrote a silly guide to enable trying to get on live using similar hardware. It's possible that the SmartBro network can work as well. You can download the 2.5 MB MS Word file which is complete with screenshots here:

http://www.4shared.com/file/114655975/e2e65546/XBL_on_PLDT_WeRoam_-_a_Crude_Guide_101.html

It is by no means perfect and the possibility of dropped games and your pre-meditate sniper head-shot is always emminent. There should be no problem downloading demos, videos and more importantly updating your gamerscore. In fact, I was able to update my console to NXE using the Huawei E220. Hope this works for you.

Samsung Omnia as an external GPS device

I was able to use my Samsung Omnia as an external GPS device for Google Earth. I have not checked what other Windows XP based GPS applications will function using this set-up but I’m pretty sure, other Windows Mobile phones with GPS capabilities should do nicely as well. Here’s what you need.

Franson GPS Gate for Windows Mobile – http://franson.com/gpsgate/guide.asp?platform=ppc
Franson GPS Gate for Windows 2.0 – http://franson.com/gpsgate/guide.asp?section=Google_Earth_GPS_200&platform=winxp

Assuming you are able to get Franson GPS gate to work with your particular Mobile device (GPS Signals and lock should be apparent), installation of the GPS Gate on Windows should be done as well. I forgot where I copied the stuff below so it is unfortunate that I cannot give where credit is due. Don’t forget to visit the link on Franson GPS Gate for Windows which I posted above.

I'll elaborate more on this later on ... 'cause this has something to do with the wardriving stuff I've mentioned.

Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian Phones

Just in case you wanted to know, it's been out for some time already. Yes, the Garmin Mobile XT software we've been using on our Omnias and Pocket PC is available for Symbian based phones like the Nokia E series (E71, etc.) and E90's.

You can go visit the main page at the Garmin website to study the quite lengthy process of installation. It's really not that hard, believe me.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3939

Download the file directly here:

http://www8.garmin.com/software/GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050.exe

You'll need to download the appropriate basemap and support files as well. For those using Garmin Mobile XT in the Philippines, you can still use the popular Roadguide.Ph "junior" map. As always, Garmin Mobile XT is "trial-ware" and can only be used for a limited time period of around 15 days until you decide to pay for the licence.

Notes:
This Garmin Mobile XT application is designed for use on Symbian smartphone devices running S60 (ie. Nokia E6x, Nokia N7x) 3rd Edition OS .
You must have a previous version of the XT software installed on your SD card to have all of the help files, voice files and basemap files. These are not included with this update.
During installation, you will be prompted to turn on your Garmin GPS. Please Note: You will not gain access to Garmin Online features and/or the navigation will be unavailable without connecting your Garmin GPS.
A minimum card size of 256 MB is recommended for Garmin Mobile XT software with maps.
Please save all appropriate data before beginning the update.

How to adjust Omnia volume levels, an easy way to boost your default volume settings

Headset or loudspeaker to weak for you? Ringtones to soft to hear?
Its quite simple and does not require a hard rest.

In the phone keypad type:

*#0002*28346#

You will then have a screen pop up called audio control util.

How to change the loudspeaker volume for ringtones, movies, mp3s etc

Click menu, normal then handset (the first one, Phones headset/loudspeaker) Here you can change:

Speaker volume: SPK(02) -db is less volume, I have set this to -1.5db (level)
Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) This effects the overall volume of Mp3s, movies etc -both headset and loud speaker. I have set this to 0db.
Radio Volume: RVOL

How to change the headset / earphones volume.

Click menu, normal then headset (the second one, Headphones) Here you can change:

Headphones volume: HP(02) -db is less volume +db is more volume, I have set this to 0db (level)
Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) This effects the overall volume of Mp3s, movies etc. I have set this to 0db.
Radio Volume: RVOL

*You must click menu / apply for changes to take effect
*I recommend play a Mp3 launch the app, then apply the changes and set your prefered max volume.
*Setting high levels could damage the loud speaker or your headphones, not to mention your hearing!.

So there you have it, you can have headphones louder than an iphone or ipod if you wish. I don't recommend touching other settings unless you know what your doing or have copied the defaults so you can revert back incase you srew something up!

Here are the original and default setting just in case you screw up:

These are default values in case anyone wants to revert back

Quick GPS fix without XTRA enabled, How to get quicker GPS fix, without enabling Enhanced GPS

Lifted from Modaco c/o robertut: http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-omnia-http-i900-modaco-com/274303/quick-gps-fix-without-xtra-enabled/

This supposedly will help us get a lock quick and nicely on our Garmin Mobile XT.

If you turn off XTRA, you'll notice that it may require even more than 15-30 minutes to get a fix. Turning on XTRA will shorten this to almost instant fixes...

Many people prefer to disable Enhanced GPS Settings, XTRA data download. This is because 3G/GPRS data connections can cost a lot, especially if you are abroad and roaming.

It seems like Samsung has left some settings turned on in the registy, for debugging purposes, and this makes really slow to get a fix without XTRA data. According to Microsoft's documentation (see GPS Intermediate Driver General Registry Settings) some features like logging can be enabled for debugging, in GPS Intermediate Driver's registry settings, which stays between the hardware and your navigation software.

My experience shows that the following steps seem to improve the time to get a GPS fix, without need to download XTRA data:

1. Go to Settings > System > Enhanced GPS and set both settings to "Disable"

2. Go to your device's registry, and see the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver

3. Change the following string values to nothing (don't delete them, just edit them and clear the value):

CurrentLogFile (originally \GPSID_log.txt)

OldLogFile (originally \GPSID_log.bak)

4. Soft-reset your device

5. With File Explorer, go to My Device, and delete the two GPSID_log files you see, and the file named xtra. If you don't soft-reset, you will not be able to delete some of them.

6. Check again the registry setting. Sometimes in rare cases it may revert the settings back - but that's a general WM problem.

After this, if you start your navigation software under clear sky, you can get a fix in a coulpe of minutes, without the use of XTRA, or any other data source, than pure native GPS satellites.

To digg in the registry there are many free and shareware tools available, I can recommend Total Commander CE, which has a registry plugin.

Also noticed (but this may be really subjective) that flipping the device with the back upwards, while waiting for GPS fix, improves reception a bit - it seems like the internal receiver antenna is oriented to the back of the device... but if anyohe has dissassembled the Omnia can confirm or infirm this.

GPS Info Coming Soon

A couple of drafted articles reside on my hard disk right now. As my day job consumes most of my waking hours, it's been awhile since I've uploaded or shared interesting stuff online. Here's a couple of things to watch out for:
  • War driving with the Samsung Omnia or a similar Pocket PC device with a GPS receiver. In this entry, I will share how a drive from Shaw Blvd. to P. Tuazon Cubao yielded a slew of Wi-Fi hotspots (some locked, some carelessly left open!).
  • GPS Navigation in the Philippines (yes, it's been here all the time!).
  • GPS Tracking devices applicable to Philippine operators of taxi cabs, bus line, logistics, and etc.
  • Probably a silly attemp to document how I will manage to "open" a China-made Windows CE based PND.

What is your Omnia Good For?

What is your Omnia good for? For calling and sending SMS of course! Though it is a tad slow when creating a new SMS (I'd rather put everything in the Phonebook shortcut), there are a lot of great applications worth installing and actually using on a daily basis. Whether you are a professional or a student, here are some worthwhile applications I've actually used and tested on the Samsung Omnia. I'm sure most of you are familiar with most of the stuff I'm going to discuss below. However, for most of you starting out with this gadget here are some worthwhile apps (bragging rights!) to try out and install.

Garmin Mobile XT - https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=11413

One of the better running GPS softwares suitable for the Philippines. It's shareware, so expect it to lose functionality after a period or so. Unless you purchase the rights to use this coded gem for USD 99.99 USD, you can expect the similar functionality and performance (sans TTS) with stand alone Garmin units like the Nuvi 360 and the like. Since everyone has been asking me where to get the Philippine map, I'd like to stress that it's free to download at the Roadguide Philippines Mapping Project Website (http://roadguide.ph ).

Ateksoft WebCamera Plus -http://www.ateksoft.com/webcamplus.html
Use your Omnia or PDA/Smartphone as a webcam. I've been able to use this with the latest Yahoo messenger. Aside from the usual video feeds you can share, one can also broadcast screen activity from his or her PDA/Smartphone's screen. Here are the features shamelessly copied of Ateksoft's website:

Transforms your PDA or Smartphone to high-resolution web-camera.
Use your PDA/Smartphone as microphone!
Even through Wi-Fi!
Can work through any connection: USB ActiveSync, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, 3G, LAN.
Compatible with almost all modern Smartphones and PDAs.
Can be used as web-camera in many programs: Skype, MSN Messager, Yahoo Messager, Virtual Dub and many others.
Can capture device screen and transmit video to Desktop PC.

mobiion MagiCall - http://www.mobiion.com/magicall.html

If you're a regular dork, you would definitely need something like this running in the background of your smartphone. MagiCall smart, rule based filter software for SMS filtering and dual-way calls filtering. It gives you the ability to block unwanted callers with SMS replies. It can also add prefixes automatically in front of the original called numbers or hang them up depending on your settings. In addition, you can take control of incoming SMS and more! (one again shamelessly lifted of the website).

So if privacy is your concern or if your a devious individual who prefers to keep his or her dirty little secrets tucked away in a secret folder, this is the application for you. Don't tell them I told you!

Key features:

Missed calls filtering
Supports regular expressions
Bidirectional calls filtering
Automatically uses calling card
SMS messages filtering
Filters by appointments
Filters by numbers
Filters by Contacts/Unknown callers
Filters by Outlook Categories
Filters by SMS contents
Filters by SMS sender's name
Reply SMS to caller

Vito Audio Notes Touch - http://vitotechnology.com/mobile-audio-recorder.html

Audio Notes Touch is an mp3 audio recorder with finger-friendly interface. Audio Notes Touch provides advanced recording options in most convenient and intuitive way, so that everything can be done with a finger tap. Revolutionary GUI gives recording a whole new dimension.

Since I'm a sales person, it's important for me to record phone conversations to keep track of developments and other stuff. More importantly, that the person on the other end will never know you were recording the conversation.

Samsung Omnia Tips and Tweaks

I was able to toy around with the second generation Omnias and they seem to be better than the ones which came out last year. These tips are rather old and I'd probably update them soon when I get the chance.

I’m just passing on the information I saw at the Modaco threads. There was this one guy who complied all the tips and tweaks from the long threads and put them all in one convenient PDF file. I’m pasting everything back here again so others may benefit and enjoy from it. I think there are still a lot of Omnia owners out there who have not seen this. Enjoy and kudos to the wonderful people at Modaco.

Please test the two YouTube video players for accessing the full desktop version YouTube on your
i900, the downloads are located here at http://forum.xda-evelopers.com/showthread.php?t=362685
in post number one. I believe these two YouTube video player will work on the i900 running MS OS
6.1 (PDA) professional software. I already have these YouTube video players playing on another PDA
running the MS OS 6.1 professional software and also works on a smartphone running the MS OS 6.1,
works like a charm on both devices.
Just follow the instructions in post number one, the first YouTube video player compontent parts are:
1. The FlashvideeoBundle.cab, install to the SD Card on the i900.
2. TCPMP/Player.cab version 0.81RC1, install to the SD Card on the i900.
3. Next, soft reset the i900.
4. Install the Codecs Plugin Zip Pak to the SD Card on the i900, when all the codec installation is
completed, soft reset the i900.
5. Next, go to http://www.youtube.com via your mobile web browser and click (Touch) the video
that you want to watch, a drop menu will appear click (Touch) play video and the video of your
choice will play.
The YouTubePlayer.Cab is another YouTube video player that will also work on the SamSung Omnia
i900, it was design exclusively for Windows mobile pocketPC devices. You can install the
YouTubePlayer.cab to the main memory or to your SD card. This is my first post on this website, so if
my post is in the wrong place, please forgive me and moderators feel free to move it to the correct
place. To all testers, let me know how things work out for you.........!
**When the video file starts to play, tap on the screen once will bring you into fullscreen mode
(landscape). Enjoy!!
YOUTUBE ISSUE
After you access http://m.youtube.com, you will select one of the video and click to watch it.
It will launched Arcsoft Streaming Player to play the contents. Few things to take note.
I tried using my office network. (Failed, could be firewall)
I tried using my home network. (Failed as well)
I tried using GPRS and it works.
After 2 hours of troubleshooting, I realised a few things:
- Need to set the connect via The Internet under options in the player
- I need to do port forwarding in my Linksys Router in order to work.
- Open 1024 - 65255 Both (TCP & UDP) to i900 Wireless IP Address
- Need to switch off GPRS connection so that it will not switch to GPRS instead.
Finally, I able to view youtube on my i900. Very tedious in my home network but no choice, it is
cheaper this way. :p
Or
In the setting>connection>advanced>select networks, both the option are set to "my work network".
Click on the edit>proxy settings, check the "this network connects to internet"
This will prevent the phone from using gprs.
In the streaming player option, chose connect via "my work network". Need to set the router firewall
for the phone to access port 1024 to 65534
Camera Counter Reset for Samsung Omnia i900
Seems like mine does not reset after numerous of hardreset and not sure why.
Anyway, this is the location of the counter. After you have copy all the photos out from the default
folder, just change the value back to 1 or any number you would like and it will be reset. I have tried
it on my Omnia and it works. grin.gif

Camera Problem
Encounter some problems when using.. Can't seem to operate the camera.. Whenever i try to open
will prompt me " Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. "
Try to restart yr phone and open the camera again.. see how i do this.
Omnia can't connect to Internet
Seems can't connect to my network. Had tried different combo on the setting, eg. Connect to:
Internet--> checked on "Use IEEE 802.1x..." --> Smartcard or Certificate... etc,etc
Even tried Connect to: Work, --> and all that. And still cannot connect.
Anyone knows how to solve this? I'm using Linksys wireless router WRT54G.
have u activate ur Wifi? If Yes, Can your phone detect your router? If Yes, Does your router set to MAC
filtering?
If all of above is yes.... I suggest you either tell us what step you have done on config or simple call
Sumsung support
Yes for others and no MAC filtering on the router. Steps done as the original post. Had already type in
the WEP pw but still no connectivity.
Space ROM not enough
you can direct your temp files from IE/Opera to the 16GB or Storage card
you need to know how to tweak thats all
50mb is sufficient, my SMS is 3000 excluding SENTS! still working fast & left 30mb+ while
alot program i just didnt select to my 16GB only.
Connect Internet using Wifi only
to ensure always connect to the internet using wifi only - set the browse connection network to
WORK, instead of INTERNET and set up your wifi to connect to work.
In this case, you will not use your 3G to surf net.
By setting back to automatic , you can surf the net using 3G.
Battery always dry
The port splitter was turned on all the way. Stupid me. I put auto start on reboot.
GPS Not Fixed
i've set the hardware port at Com9 and application at port com3. it does take awhile for the navis
s/w to get rid of the "gps can not get fix" error message.. i did a try out on while driving around.. it
seems to be working fine !
here's the trick. turn on everything for enhanced gps and stand in an open area. in mins, the software
will sense the satellite and in future there will be no connection wif gprs. i juz did a test run, i can
assure that it is working absolutely fine, my cousin and i both have this phone and our gps are
working just as fine. The most amazing part is , if you took a different route, the process of rerouting
is less than 10s.im impressed
GPS Program Port: 1
GPS hardware port: Com9
Baud Rate: 9600
Access: Manage GPS automatically
when you run Navis, go to "navigation" and check the "GPS Connection: "Auto-Detect"
It should work by then....Good luck.. pls try this outdoor.. otherwise u will get "GPS Not Fix" error
message.
USING MAPKING
Here's the setting you need to do in order to use Mapking, its simple.
1. Go download the port splitter 1.1 free from
http://www.freewareppc.com/download/commun...tsplitter.shtml

SILENT CAMERA SHUTTER SOUND
create a silent.wav using the desktop PC's voice recorder. I then transfer it to the \windows directory
of the device.
To play safe I first make a copy of the shutter sound in my i900, say, shutter3.wav. I then rename the
silent.wav to shutter3.wav. The device will ask you whether you want to replace the one in ROM, etc.
Click yes.
Now, you will have the shutter sound 3 as a silent sound. When I need the shutter sound, I would
choose the sound 1 or 2. When I don't want the sound, I will then choose sound 3.
Or using registry

New FREE Utility, Disable GPRS connections for when you're abroad
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/
Already registered MAP SW into micro SD card.
You might want to try this method, it works on my old 818pro for all applications i installed before,
you mentioned you installed on your microSD right, dont uninstall, simply copy the installed folder
from your 1gb card to your new 2gb card. The registry recongised that the apps is installed on a
external card, by right, it doesnt matter what card you use, because it will recongise it as long it is an
external card...
CLEAR MEMORY
if you surf the web often on your Opera/Internet Explorer, try clearing the cache and you should be
getting some of your memory back..those that are preinstalled in the ROM, I believe you arent able
to uninstall it..you can try to see if the programs are available at the \My Device\Program Files\
folder or not...if yes, you can just simply delete the folder away...

SOFT RESET
To do a soft reset, locate the hole beside the power button. Use a stylus to soft reset it.
HARD RESET
With the phone OFF .To perform HARD RESET, press and hold CALL and END button, then turn on the
device but pressing and holding the POWER button.
Hard reset just wipes out the data in your device but leave the built in storage untouched

LAUNCH TASK MANAGER
holding the menu button (top right button) oso bring up the task manager.
You can also launch the task switcher app by swiping your finger from bottom up (kinda like HTC
TouchFlo to launch the cube).
USB CHARGE
The data/sync cable can only charge the phone if you plug into a PC. It doesn't charge if you plug the
USB cable into those USB connectors that connections to the mains
I have used pda phones from O2, Asus, Dopod, HTC and has always been using USB connected to
mains for charging and never run into any problem. The highest amps I have seen on these USB main
connectors are 1A which I think is pretty safe. Those that are less than 1A takes a long time to charge.
I haven't seen anything above 1A for USB main chargers.
INSTALL NAVIGATION SOFTWARE TO STORAGE
I have installed onto the 16G storage too.
Keep your original 1G card contents. And also, take note of the codes that you have keyed in to
activate the Agis software. Anytime when you hard reset your phone, copy all the contents onto the
16G storage and re-enter the codes. (or I guess that backing up the .lic file will do fine too)
CHECK BATTERY 100% CHARGED

MANAGE PROGRAM ON YOUR STORAGE
If you browse from Explorer, Storage Card refers to this folder
"\Mobile Device\My Windows Mobile-Based Device\My Storage"
So, try to store all your files in that folder so you won’t take up the precious MAIN storage/Program
memory.
(1) Reinstall any programs that needs to be "on connection" most of the time such as emoze and any
other phone/communication related applications to the main device, not in the My Storage.
(2) Move back inbox attachments, PIE cache, Opera cache, etc. to the main device, not in My Storage.
(3) Based on the principle above, no phone, communication, always-on programs, cache, email
attachments are to be in My Storage.

ACTIVE SYNC ERROR WHEN TRANSFER BIG FILE
I am new to WM6.1, using activesync to transfer mp3 file..its work. But when I transfer rmvb/avi file
(more than 100MB), a windows "copy and convert..." pop up and the system hang... cannot transfer.
Do you guys encountered this or I have got a faulty set?? Pls. help.
Also when I view the rmvb file using windows media player the viewing is jerky or lag in audio.. is
something wrong. the rmvb file only 20MB.
Try to avoid file filesizes when transferring over ActiveSync. It may be a better idea to use a card
reader instead. It's much much faster and cheap anyway.

CHANGE BACKGROUND COLOR TO BLACK
This is how I do it :
1. Take a black picture (cover the camera) and save in folder x
2. Go to setting/theme
3. Chose the color you want for theme (eg blue) and today text (use white)
4. Background : browse to folder x where you keep the your black screen picture and add it in.
5. Go to setting/personal/today/samsung theme 2, then OK
It will have a black background and look quite good. All the best
When choosing a background, you should use THEME under Start/Settings/Theme. Select the
background picture there. Do not select the picture under Today (Start/Settings/Today) in which all
pictures will show in a half tone.
But the words under Start are also in black. How to change the words to white?
See whether this serves your purposes. the background will be black and the start menu words will
be white.
Copy the tsk file on your windows directory. Go to today and select allblack.tsk as your theme.

REMOVE SHOZU
Thanks. All the Shozu programs under the folder \program files can be deleted but after a reset all
the files will be re-created again. If you have Memmaid (or other memory management program),
you will see that Shozu is still running in the background, occupying some 400K of memory. It is this
program that creates the other proram files in \program files directory. Interestingly there is no
startup link to auto this process after a soft reset. The main program file is actually in \windows and
is called ShozuRCP.exe which cannot be deleted (in ROM).
So, the only possibility left is the registry. I have since located the registry and deleted the value.
Now after a soft reset, I don't have the Shozu running anymore. The files under \program files will
not be re-created. So, it seems working but still need more time to test it thoroughly first.
MAP ROTATE 180 degree
I was complaining that in my MapKing 2007 the car direction and map will rotate 180 degree when
stopping at traffic light. A kind brother here (in Part 4) advised to set the sensibility to normal (which
I usually set it at High). Yes, it works !!!!! By setting the sensibility to Normal, the problem is resolved.
Thanks a lot. This forum rocks.
ACTIVESYNC NOT WORKING
Can't seems to make ActiveSync work?? I thought it will auto-connect when using cable but seems
like mine is not working. The PC can detect the phone and I can access "My Storage".
I noticed under Control Panel->Device Manager, my portable devices is missing...
[Settings\USB Connection Mode] - select USB function as ActiveSync instead of Mass Storage. this
should solve your problem as your PC already detect your phone.
if your PC cant detect your phone, then go to [Settings\USB to PC] - uncheck Enable advanced
network functionality
AUTO COMPLETE / SUGGEST WORD ON KEYBOARD IS NOT WORKING

PLAYING VIDEO USING COREPLAYER
Need some advise. I installed Core Player in My Storage and tried to play a avi file. Very choppy.
Should I install it in Device? Thanks
Check whether coreplayer is using the correct video output. It should be using intel xscale for the
best performance.
First the left softkey "menu">Tools>Preferences>left softkey "select page">Video
In the video output select Intel XScale
hi to share my settings i using video output raw framebuffer, high quality, uncheck dither box. under
buffering check microdrive mode. When converting select 16:9 aspect ratio to make full use of the

Bro if video choppy file size may be too big, try converting it, i using Super converter, settings video

STORE EMAIL & ATTACHMENT ON STORAGE CARD
Good news for you. You can store all your emails and attachments on the Storage Card in WM5/6.
Using a registry editor, create or edit the following entries:
HKLM\\System\Inbox\Settings\PropertyPath with value \Storage Card\Messaging
HKLM\\System\Inbox\Settings\AttachPath with value \Storage Card\Messaging\Attachments
Then move the entire Messaging folder under \Windows to \Storage Card and do a soft reset.
One caveat is that you need to disable the "Messaging" Today plugin before your soft reset. If you
don't do this, a second "\Storage Card" folder will be created in your ROM and your real Storage Card
will be renamed "\Storage Card2", which isn't very useful is it?
Go ahead and try it. I am doing this currently on my Dopod U1000 with WM6.
DISABLE MESAGING PLUGIN
to disable the Messaging Plugin, click on Start, Settings, Today, Items and untick the Messaging
option...

Welcome to the new Pusakal.

Weclcome to the new Pusakal blog. Previously, most of the stuff I've shared and published were posted at Wordpress.com since last year. It began with the acquisition of a nifty mobile phone called the Samsung Omnia and my silly adventures with it. All those tweaking, researching and playing around made me accidentally bump into a whole new world GPS navigation. As my Samsung Omnia had a GPS receiver, nothing stopped me from discovering how to make it work in my country. Then came the maps, the editing, then the tracking devices and the otherwise late night tweaking and testings. Since I had some visitors stumble on the old Pusakal blog, I've decided to raise my casual blogging activities to the next level. I'm pretty sure you may find what you are looking for as thig blog aims to bring all our common interests in one location - right here in PusakalPinoy!
